Although drugs and talk therapy are much
easier to take than behavior therapy, a recent
large-scale study involving 156 patients
published on November 29 in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry showed "Neither antidepressants nor
"talk therapy" were able to outperform
placebo pills in a new clinical trial on
depression treatment ." The medication
group (50 patients) tok sertraline for 16
we...eks, another group received supportive-expressive
therapy (what's that? read - unstructure,
non-prescriptive) twice a week for four weeks
and then weekly for 12 weeks. The three groups achieved similar results. In fact, some patients on drugs actually fared worse than placebo users. So far, the only kind of therapy that works is behavior therapy. Even this is subject to many external factors and results are no guarantee, and it demands much effort in the patient and faily in the treatment. Sorry to disappoint! |
